Vampire facials are an extreme form of anti-ageing treatment that uses your own body’s resources to improve the elasticity and health of your skin. Also called Platelet Rich Plasma therapy, this treatment uses the patient’s own blood cells for regenerative therapy.
What is Platelet Rich Plasma?
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is autologous blood (that obtained from the individual being treated) with concentrations of platelets that contain several growth factors. Being a plasma, this blood is made up of smaller solid components of red and white blood-cells and platelets. This fluid is packed with proteins that are essential for healing injuries. These properties are applied to the patient during treatment to foster growth factors that are up to 10 times higher than normal.
Because of this, the treatment is ideal for treating ageing skin, and can even assist with hair, muscle and joint regeneration.
How Vampire Facials Work
First, a needle is used to draw some blood from the patient, which is spun in a machine to separate it from its platelets. This plasma is then extracted, and then applied to the patient’s face using a similar process to microneedling. These platelets are responsible for repairing damaged cells, and as such get to work on broken skin to improve its elasticity, thereby reducing scars and sagging.
The treatments are conducted with anaesthetic cream to ensure that the client feels comfortable throughout the procedure, with the only discomfort coming from the process of extracting the blood.
What are the Advantages of Vampire Facials?
Vampire facials have been proven to provide a number of benefits to the skin, including:
- Improving the appearance of scars, stretch marks and wrinkles.
- Rejuvenating skin under the eyes.
- Keeping skin pores tight.
- Increasing the volume of areas of skin such as the cheeks where patients would otherwise require fillers.
All of these benefits make themselves known in a completely natural manner, since the procedure uses your own blood for the treatment.
Are Vampire Facials Safe?
Since blood is sourced from the patient’s own body, there is virtually no chance of possible allergic reactions or bad side-effects. The treatment should not be done in conjunction with any anti-inflammatory or blood thinning medication however, since the procedure does result in mild swelling and bleeding. Beyond that, however, and when conducted under careful supervision, the procedure is perfectly safe.
